Whistle While You Work

Years ago -- at least five, probably seven or eight -- I remember a conversation I had with my best friends in California. Actually it was more of a debate: Was it better to do freelance work that you didn't really like for great pay so you could work less and have more time to do the things you really loved? Or was it better to create a life around work you really loved even if it meant working crazy hours and possibly lowering your standard of living?

I was living the first option and voted for the second, believing work should be play. I envisioned a life where each day I would wake up excited to go achieve whatever was on my to-do list for the day. My friends were more pragmatic: Bang out the boring work, and then go play. None of us even considered the third option of working lots of hours for little pay doing something you didn't like. No thank you, period.

I headed back up to Montana, where I'd moved to be closer to nature. I didn't have a clear vision of passionate work that would light me on fire, and it was pretty nice to just work 25 to 30 hours a week writing for high-tech companies and then go fish, ski, hike, act, volunteer, and settle into coffee shops. It was nice, but it wasn't satisfying. And then one day, I hit a wall. I didn't want to do it any more. I sold almost everything I owned, rented out my house, and moved to Sri Lanka to help with the tsunami recovery.

Now, five years later, I'm at a crossroads again. I spent five incredible years doing international development work -- the last three in eastern and southern Africa. It was exhilarating, enriching, rewarding, and incredibly frustrating at times. I'm very thankful for those years, and now I'm ready for something new.

The question is, what? For awhile I didn't have an answer to that question. But now it's emerging (yikes!): I want to act, travel, and write. I want to share stories, mine and others, that touch a chord in people and make them look at the world around them a little differently. I'm scared to take this on. Aren't enough people already doing this? Is there really anything new to be said? Am I creative enough to really succeed? Isn't helping to balance out the world's unfair distribution of resources a more important and necessary goal? Shouldn't I already be sharing more of my own wealth to help effect this change?

I don't have clear answers to these questions. I have realized that not all people have this same desire to live an engaged, passionate life -- and not in a bad way. Different things make different personalities tick. For me though, I now know that my work needs to be play. The next step is to really take the plunge. I'm not quite there yet, but I am inching closer and closer to the edge.

Big Dreams

The writing I'm doing right now is unformed, mainly exercises to let me practice more creative writing. It's nothing I want to share, but I also want to keep this blog alive. Today roundabout connections brought me to a blog post talking about a book I keep coming across online. The woman's post also talked about creating a list of 100 big dreams -- what you'd love to achieve in your life. I've done these lists before, and her post inspired me to do one again today. I'm pretty amazed at how different my big dreams are now: softer, smaller scale (well, some of them), less about big adventures and more about living a healthy, happy life in whatever way that means to me each day. Here's my list. Care to share any of yours?

My List of Big Dreams

1.    Do a REALLY funny stand-up routine

2.    Write an award-winning play or screenplay

3.    Write an award-winning book

4.    Be incredibly fit

5.    Remain a non-smoker

6.    Have an incredibly fulfilling lasting relationship with a wonderful, loving, kind, respectful partner

7.    Having this relationship come into my life real soon!

8.    Go to the Galapagos, snorkel there, take amazing pictures

9.    Really learn how to use a camera professionally

10.   Earn some money with my photos

11.   Treat myself with kindness, love, and respect

12.   Treat others with more kindness, love, and respect

13.   Learn to hold my tongue and take a moment to respond thoughtfully when my buttons are pushed

14.   Trust in my brilliance and intelligence

15.   Look only to myself for validation (which contradicts # 1, 2, and 3, but #14 should take care of those)

16.   Find and do work I’m really passionate about

17.   Have the financial freedom to not work if I don’t choose to

18.   Climb Machu Picchu, visit Istanbul, and travel through New Zealand

19.   Become more accepting and less judgmental

20.   Create a really juicy Web site and blog

21.   Continue to have amazing relationships with my family and good friends

22.   Continue to approach life with curiosity

23.   Continue to have good health

24.   Invent something fun or useful and make some money off it

25.   Learn to play the guitar well enough to sing songs around a campfire

26.   Learn more Spanish

27.   Find a partner in crime to nourish our creativity

28.   Release money worries

29.   Have a dog and easefully care for it

30.   Continue loving my life!

31.   Become an excellent impromptu chef

32.   Visit the Antartica

33.   Have a better relationship with David

34.   Start being my greatest cheerleader (my mom will serve as my model)

35.   Silence (or at least ignore) the Everybody voice in my head

36.   Become an expert at something

37.   Release my frantic, knee-jerk “need an answer now” response when I really don’t need an answer right now

38. Sit calmly in the chaos when I really do need an answer now and don’t have one yet

39. Learn some graphic design skills

40. Go be an audience member of the Ellen show, or even a guest!

I plan to update these whenever they change as my life is a bubbling brook that likes to make new splashes, often every day.

You Know You're Tired When ...

Sometimes when I watch sappy commercials, I cry. This usually happens when I've exhausted myself. My mind and body are so tired that any emotional pull brings me immediately to tears.

The last four weeks I've been resting. I quit my job in Kenya, moved to France, and curled up in my rented furnished apartment. I've gone out with new friends a few times, and an old college friend came through one weekend, leading to a whirlwind trip to Bilboa. But overall, for hours each day, I've been resting. The first two weeks I napped seriously just about every day. Sixty to 90 minutes to two hours flat out. Dead to the world. And then a full eight hours of sleep each night.

The third week I still napped some days, but my energy started to return. This past week I haven't napped at all and have started to wonder if it's time to get off my duff. Get out there and surf. Make more new friends. Spend more time outside taking pictures. Write more. Do more. Make the most of this "non-working" break. And then I decide, no, I'm happy still resting. I've been torn though between society's and my own calls for achievement and activity and my inner voice guiding me toward rest, creativity, quiet, and alone time.

Then today I came across the 21.5.800 challenge: 21 days of writing 800 words a day and doing yoga five times a week. Perfect! My body has been getting achy spending so much time inside and often prone. This challenge gives me the motivation I need to write, rest and move if I want (the challenge allows corpse pose for the yoga if preferred).

I signed up, was poking around the creator's Web site, and came across this: If you are fried, hate yoga, have several children under the age of three, just had a root canal, are exhausted, and/or are energetically behind the eight-ball in every way, PLEASE DO SAVASANA FOR THE 21 DAYS. I started crying immediately, and the tears keep coming. I had no idea I was still so tired. I have no children and now no job and yet energetically I am burnt to a crisp.

So thank you Bindu Wiles for coming up with this writing and resting challenge that also gives me the opportunity to build new community. And thank you for bringing me to the place I needed to find to validate my enormous need for rest right now.

Creative Energy

Ah, I wish I had more of it. This month has been incredibly draining. Amazing how emotional upset can really wipe you out.

But I’m turning over a new leaf. Had a great coaching session with my amazing coach Mollee Johnson and have committed to writing three blogs a week, printing and hanging three of my incredible Africa photos, and exploring opportunities for a new career in international development consulting. Still not sure how that last one will pan out, but here’s to seeing!

Must go get some food in me to get going on all of this. And softball at 3 pm. Wishing everyone a great day!

Musings Under a Full Moon

So, my boyfriend and I are in crisis. I’ve been a nightmare during the 3.5 weeks he had been traveling in Sudan. He’s now back in Khartoum and is ready to be done with me. I don’t really blame him. And yet, he knows I’m doing my best and am working to be a more supportive, less needy girlfriend. He’ll return to Nairobi some time this week. And supposedly he’ll contact me when he does to “discuss our situation further.” I hope we can create an amazing relationship that fully supports one another. And I hope I can move beyond my neediness and impatience and learn to trust his love and respect his space. I’m feeling inspired under this full moon. And I love knowing that whatever happens, it’s okay. It’s what I need to learn right now. Here’s to living in the moment even as despair washes over me, hope elates me, and I embrace whatever happens. Also need to say that the agency I work for has made me intuitively stop using the serial comma. Here I am reclaiming its use.

So am I ready? I need to share my experiences with the world. I’m going through a lot of changes right now and want to process them out loud, in public, and yet with enough privacy that I feel I can say whatever I want. You’ll like this blog if you value honesty, integrity, passion, and a desire to explore whatever life presents you with. Of course it also matters whatever you make yourself open to.
